The terrain was constructed by local contractor DW Drennan as designed and supervised by George Shepherd, founding chair of Annan Pétanque Club.
George, a retired civil and geotechnical engineer, discovered the sport when on holiday in Morocco. On his return to Scotland he discovered that there were eleven clubs in Scotland affiliated with the Scottish Pétanque Association and the closest to Annan was Moffat. He joined the Moffat Club and was soon determined to introduce the sport to Annan. After exploring several venues the current location was selected with the assistance of the local.
Ward Officer, Jaime Nicholson Ward Officer, Annandale South, Communities Directorate. With the blessing of the Community Asset Manager Nicola Simpson, the application was made to the Department for Planning, and consent was obtained to proceed. George then spent a considerable amount of time applying to various bodies to raise sufficient funds to proceed with construction. In total, he raised £15,550.00. He then negotiated with various suppliers and Neil Carlyle, (DW Drennan) to proceed with the project.
Construction began on 1st August 2022 with the assistance of Dumfries and Galloway Council, Street Scene, and Seaforth Depot who removed the turf and most of the topsoil to reuse elsewhere in the area. Crushed stone was imported from a local quarry to provide the playing surface. A fence was erected to prevent people from accidentally entering the playing area. Signs were designed by Mckend Graphics and attached to the fence.
